Medsoc Programme

MedSoc Programme

Medsoc is our sixth form’s medical society which supports everybody interested in the field of medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine. Those simply interested in the world of health care and its topical discussions are also welcome.

For our sixth form students we aim to provide a community of support. During weekly lunchtime sessions, students are taken through the NHS HOT topics, the application process, admissions assessments, and are motivated to find work experience and volunteering opportunities. The society benefits from guest speakers who provide valuable insight into their roles in healthcare. They also instigate detailed debates and fill students in on what to expect in their professions. This helps to ease pressures and increase confidence for our students’ applications to university.

MedSoc is aimed at Year 12 and Year 13 students. From Year 12 we encourage and support students in how to find work experience and volunteering, debate and help with UCAS (university) applications. This includes medical ethics; choosing the right university; writing personal statements; aptitude test preparation (UCAT); and interview preparation – for both panel and MMI style interviews.

Recent successes
We are proud of the achievements of our students in their applications to university. Some of our recent successes include:

Eliana shone as a student at Ashmole since Year 7, demonstrating a tremendous work ethic. Her hard work and commitment to her education was second to none and she flourished in sixth form attaining A*A*A*, and impressing at interview. She ran debates at our regular MedSoc sessions, engaging the other students in HOT topics in medicine.

Duvindi studying Medicine at Exeter University
Duvindi had a huge role in our MedSoc, as a coordinator, while in the sixth form. She helped to organise the sessions and run regular debates. She also provided great support to students in Year 12, mentoring them in their decision to apply for medicine and with their UCAT preparation. On top of this Duvindi got A*A*A* in her A levels.

Maryam studying Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London
Maryam impressed her teachers from the start, as an incredibly bright and hardworking scientist. She frequently attained in the top 3 in the cohort in her A-levels, and attained A*A*A*. Always keen to learn more about dentistry - in dental practices and hospital settings, she demonstrated her positive attitude and excellent work ethic to the universities, securing her place at QMUL.
