Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Citizenship Education intends to lay the foundations for healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online. With the knowledge that children and young people are increasingly experiencing challenges, the subject content has been developed to equip our pupils with the knowledge and capability to take care of themselves and receive support if problems arise.

Our PSHE curriculum focusses on four core themes:

• Health and wellbeing
• Relationships and Sex Education
• Living in the wider world  - Careers, Economic and Citizenship Education

Our curriculum aims to enable our children to become healthy, safe, independent, responsible members of society who demonstrate respect and tolerance and who are prepared to face and manage the challenges and opportunities of an ever-changing modern Britain.

In studying PSHE and Citizenship, students will improve their skills of enquiry, communication and participation.  They will also grow in confidence and realise that they have a responsibility to make the most of their abilities and become positive citizens.

The PSHE curriculum is underpinned by 5 subject specific curriculum pillars.

Relationships and Sex Education teaching in PSHE

It is a statutory requirement that the school provides Relationships and Sex Education to its’ students (Education Act, 2002, Children and Social Work Act 2017, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education Statutory guidance 2020)

At Ashmole the Relationships and Sex Education programme is designed to support our students in making informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and the curriculum is designed in line with the guidance provided by the Department of Education. Working together with parents/ carers

Parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory RSE (with the exception of those parts of the programme taught as part of the National Curriculum order for Science).

There is no right to withdraw from Relationships Education.

Parents/carers wishing to exercise their right to withdraw their child are advised to contact the Senior Leader in charge of PSHE to discuss any issues of concern.
